Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study reveals that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying these medications need to be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a intense resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This challenge is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
